Solution-Focused Therapy
Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) is a brief, goal-oriented therapeutic approach that emphasizes your strengths, resources, and existing skills rather than dwelling extensively on problems or past difficulties. Instead of focusing on what’s not working, Solution-Focused Therapy helps you identify what is working and how you can build on those successes to create meaningful change.
This approach is rooted in the belief that you already possess many of the tools needed to overcome life’s challenges. By recognizing and using your existing capabilities, SFT empowers you to develop practical strategies and solutions that are tailored to your unique situation and goals. The therapy process is collaborative, with the therapist and client working together to envision desired outcomes and map out the steps to get there.
A central focus of Solution-Focused Therapy is the idea of forward thinking. Rather than analyzing the problem in depth, the emphasis is placed on defining clear, achievable goals and identifying moments—however small—when the problem is less intense or absent. These moments can offer valuable clues for building sustainable solutions.
During sessions, your therapist will ask specific, targeted questions to help highlight strengths and past successes. Common questions may include:
“What would be different if this problem were resolved?”
“Can you think of a time when this issue was less of a concern?”
“What small step could you take this week to move closer to your goal?”
SFT can be particularly effective for individuals seeking practical and timely support, and it’s often used to address concerns such as stress, anxiety, work or school issues, relationship challenges, and decision-making difficulties.
If you or someone you care about is looking for a positive, strengths-based way to work through current challenges, Solution-Focused Therapy may be a great fit. I would be happy to speak with you, answer any questions you may have, or help you schedule an appointment.
